# [My Youthful Rebellion Against Descartes] “I Am, Therefore I Think?”

Between 1971 and 1973, when I was a high school student, books and philosophical texts were scarcer than gold in Korea. To quench my intellectual thirst, I used to wake up before dawn to stand in a long, freezing line at the Busan City Public Library just to get a daily admission ticket. In that dim reading room, far before I ever knew what a computer was or had to use a slide rule, I encountered Rene Descartes’ famous maxim: "Cogito, ergo Sum" (I think, therefore I am). 

At that tender age, I remember whispering a cheeky rebellion to myself: "Wait, shouldn't it be the other way around? I exist first, therefore I think!" (ㅎㅎ) Little did I know that my youthful intuition was actually the most lethal counter-argument shared by existentialist philosophers centuries later. 

Now, at seventy-two, reading this phrase again on my MacBook screen inside my study, Noraenallodang, I realize that the dot of that cold dawn in the 1970s was the spark of my lifelong Cogito. My intellect refuses to rust, and my soul refuses to grow old within the function of time, f(t). I still think, I still doubt, and therefore, I vibrantly exist.

일흔둘의 고개에서 맥북 화면으로 이 문장을 다시 보며 깨닫습니다. 1970년대 새벽녘 도서관 문이 열리기를 기다리던 소년의 고독한 열망이 있었기에, 40년 현장 엔지니어를 지나 오늘날 AI와 마주 앉아 가문의 역사와 인류의 지혜를 다국어로 아카이브하는 나만의 완벽한 '코기토(Cogito) 알고리즘'이 완성되었다는 것을 말입니다. 소년 시절 데카르트에게 질문을 던지며 증명하려 했던 나의 주체성은 흘러가는 시간의 함수 f(t) 속에서도 여전히 늙지 않고 푸르게 살아 숨 쉬고 있습니다.
